the star: a card that represents hope, renewed strength, and faith; connecting with oneself and stepping away from fear and self-restriction. reversed, it can represent hopelessness, despair, and a loss of one’s inner spark

i want to preface this by saying i’m sorry for giving her brown eyes… she had blue eyes at first but i really couldn’t do it. pls take my word for it she looks astronomically better now.

anyways! so this card is very much inspired by the rider-waite interpretation:

and for the most part, i tried to preserve the details and colours while also putting my own spin on it! the tree in the background in my rendition is actually the panakes tree (though the bird is just a random bird). linh’s pose is fairly different from the original, but that’s the main change i made — because the original pose is fairly awkward to draw lol. i also had the water coming from her hands rather than jugs because. yk. hydrokinetic.

at its core, this card is about hope and connecting with oneself, and i really felt like that rung true for linh’s journey — especially when her arc comes full-circle in nightfall. for so long, she’s been afraid of her power, restricting and limiting herself because of it, which also rings true for the reversed meaning of this card. in nightfall, linh is faced with a catastrophe, and she must come to terms with herself in order to address it (and in fact, the previous card to this one in the deck is the tower, which represents a major change or destruction — but then is immediately followed by hope).

linh is one of my all-time favourite keeper characters, and i feel like this card fits her so well, both in terms of its meanings and its water motifs. this is also the first fully coloured marker piece that i’ve done in ages and it was so much fun! i hope i did her justice :) also some closeups for u if you’ve scrolled this far

yeah ik I’m posting this nearly a month after I drew it (that’s crazy how’d that go so fast) but I went on vacation for over a week and couldn’t take a photo until after and also I’ve since reread book 1 and started rereading Exile and the hyperfixation has died down somewhat now but I want to get back to my rereads before I go back to college at the end of this week so. yeah

also just gotta say Sophie is so <3 and I love her sm

Here's a little art with my fish original characters in national costumes that I think they would wear if they had our cultures and nationalities in their world. (I'll keep going until I've drawn them all)

And thus raise your interest in costume. And cultures. They're all different and beautiful like flowers. Not overshadowing each other, but growing intertwined.

Let grow flower meadows, instead of bloody rivers and hate.

KOTLC Art Progression :D

I was looking through some old artworks and realised how many times I’ve drawn the Wanderling Woods. I’m not quite sure why I’m so obsessed with the elven graveyard, but you’ve gotta admit it’s a cool place.

100% would get buried there.

The first drawing was done digitally using Sketchbook on a crappy school chromebook in mid 2021.

The second is a painting I did mid 2022 using acrylic paint (which was new to me at the time).

The third drawing is also done digitally, but with a proper drawing tablet (XP-Pen Artist 22-Pro) and a proper drawing application (Clip Studio Paint). This is the most recent drawing I’ve done of the Wanderling Woods, being drawn in mid 2023.

I might do another drawing again in a few months to see how I can improve it :)

How do you draw the metal shine on your animatronics?

Oh geez

Honestly?

I have no frigging idea! Couldn't start to explain what I'm doing, as I just draw and add shine and shading as I work. At least if yer talking about my robot shine in my sketches.

But alright, let's see if I can try and make examples for this..

As said above, I usually shade and shine as I go, so leaving this one mostly blank was bit of a toll on me.

But yeh, just a flat sketch of our favourite Sun guy just happy to be here

Alright, this is a very simple example for how I do most shine on areas meant to be a light colour. Can't be too drastic and risk making it look like the casing is supposed to be darker.

Best way I can explain the "shine lines", hmmm.. I'm not smart enough to have the words, I guess. I just learn from observing art and things around me to try get an idea what gives the right effect with the tools given..

Let's try with more detailing by adding soft shading.

I really do just add these things based on feel and vibe, as I go.

Do pay attention that whether it's metal shine or shading on non-metal parts, it rarely goes all the way to the art lines. Gotta preserve white space for effect, it helps giving the needed illusion of light when ye only got pencil to work with. Is the best way I can put any instructions on this.

Of course matters on the shape and desired effect on what you are drawing. There are many ways to draw shading and shine on different materials, for the right feel. This is just some basic and simple examples I can think of to try and illustrate.

I'm sure you can find plenty of better tutorials out there to explain this concept in deeper detail than I'm able to.

I never really looked it up myself, I just experimented with my techniques as I went. Even trying to set it up in separate parts have me unsure if this gonna help ya understand how I do my work.

Best I can tell ya, is I mostly tribute the backgrounds of Hollow Knight some credit for my shading techniques today. Some arts done attempting to copy the style of the game's backgrounds and detailing gave me some pointers to work from.

So, yeah, that's the best I can give ya on the subject of how I do metal shine in pencil. Best I can offer is ya look up examples that work for you, to try draw from as you figure out your own technique and vibes for it.
